Weigh in on upload limits August 2, 2008

 Hi SnapVillage Contributors!

I’ve heard from some folks on the forum asking for an update on FTP. I posted an update in the microstockgroup.com forum on this and wanted to share it here as well. Work continues on FTP upload here, but I don’t have an exact ETA for you quite yet.

As you know, we originally focused our efforts on customer facing improvements. We were getting a lot of great content directly through the site and in the mail without FTP. But as a frequently requested improvement, it has always been high on our list.

Once we were out of beta and made those customer facing improvements, we got to work on FTP. When starting this project we soon realized that in order to accept FTP we would need to completely rebuild our upload workflow. As sometimes happens – what started as a simple remodeling job has turned into a major-down-to-the-foundation overhaul.

While I’ve got your ear: what are your opinions on upload limits or upload tiers, or other such systems designed to throttle uploading and prevent review delays? Our current five-at-a-time system is in most respects self-limiting. With the new upload system this will no longer be the case, and we’ve had some discussion about the need for upload limits.

How would you tackle the need to balance allowing contributors to upload large batches, with the potential problems that could result for an unchecked system?

We’re designing this system with our contributors in mind so we would like to hear what you think about this! Let us know in the poll below and feel free to comment if you have more thoughts you’d like to share.

Guys, we were told ftp was coming over a month ago…can we get an update? I know I’m only one contributor, but I have over 2600 images. Only 1/5 of which, if that – I’ve uploaded painstakingly through the 5 at a time system. Sure, it’s going to take a bit more work hiring and training a few more part time reviewers if you open up the floodgates that ftp brings along, but it’s not like you couldn’t cap it at say 50 image uploads per day, or something. But besides that…imagine how many other contributors have only submitted 20% of their portfolios…think of how large the image collection could get in just a matter of setting up the ftp upload system. A lot of contributors are getting very impatient, which is understandable – because we see that SnapVillage has such good potential. Many of us have been seeing promising sales from what we have uploaded already. We want to see this agency succeed, but the 5 at a time is really hindering this sites potential. At this point I wouldn’t even care if I had to wait 1-2 weeks to get my images reviewed. As long as I know they are in cue. FTP doesn’t have to be the only method, either. There are many java based in-browser uploading methods as well.
